With our elderly being fortunate enough to live longer there are other risks attached to their older age. One of the most prevalent is falling. If you were to speak to many of our elderly, you would find that to be one of their biggest concerns and most of them would tell you that they know of friends or family members who have suffered from falls and subsequent fractures, injuries, and possible death.

One of three adults 65 or older, fall each year.

But even worse is that of 33% who fall, fewer than half will speak to their doctor about this fall. Of injuries, falls are the leading cause of death in our elderly, and most falls can be prevented. With the death rate from falls rising sharply over the past decade it is time for us to take some steps to protect our elderly.

Encourage your elderly loved ones to use a cane.

We are in the midst of April, which as we know, brings our spring showers. What better time to surprise your loved one with an umbrella walking cane?

Walking canes improve the quality of life.

Crook Handle Cane with Umbrella

Independence is very important to our elderly. The ability to come and go as they want, to take care of their own chores, purchases and so forth, and just to be able to walk their beloved dog goes a long way in improving their quality of life.

These canes are lightweight and durable.

This beautiful aluminum metallic cane is light in weight but big on stability allowing the user to feel confident in their ability to get to and from without asking for help, and that is so important. This umbrella walking cane comes in two pieces so one can carry both and use them simultaneously.

If they would prefer just the umbrella walking cane without the separate cane/carrier, we have those too. This umbrella is adjustable and comes with a rubber tip to help one steady themselves on slippery wet surface.

This umbrella conceals a walking cane inside!

Umbrella Cane with blue and black pattern

This attractive umbrella walking cane comes with a separate walking cane hidden inside the umbrella so that you can use both at the same time. Simply press the button (see picture insert) to remove the walking cane hidden inside. You can keep safe and dry at the same time. It also boasts a comfort grip handle to make holding it more secure.

A walking cane encourages activity.

Metallic Derby Handle Umbrella Cane For Men

As we age our metabolism slows down causing weight to pile on and stay on. We know that added weight increases health risks of depression, stroke, heart attack, diabetes and so forth, so staying mobile is vital. Don’t let your elderly loved ones become couch potatoes. Encourage them to stay active. You will be amazed at how much more confident they will be in their ability to go out and about with a walking cane.

The risk of falling and being injured increases with age.

In 2009 the rate of fall injuries for adults 85 years or more was almost four times that of adults aged 65 to 74. Even if an individual does not fall, the fear of falling can make one a virtual prisoner in their home, and falls happen at home every day! A walking cane can be a great tool for peace of mind. Some of the elderly refer to their walking cane as their “best friend,” and truer words could not be said.

Falls are the most common cause of traumatic brain injuries.

Traumatic brain injuries or TBIs accounted for 46% of the fatal falls which occurred among older adults. Even if the fall was not fatal, head traumas severely impact our elderly’s ability to live on their own and increase the risk of death from other complications. Let’s take care of our elderly and give them the tools they need to live a meaningful life.

Walking canes/sticks can truly benefit a wide array of individuals.

Walking canes provide much needed stability for many people. They improve the speed and safety in which one can travel inside the home and out of doors. A walking cane or stick helps to make walking steep inclines whether up or down more comfortable and safe (once used the individual will not want to go anywhere without it).

Walking sticks are useful for nature lovers of all ages.

They are not just for the elderly but for anyone who needs to relieve tension on the joints and or bones or to just improve balance. Consider a walking cane like a ski pole, a much appreciated and needed tool to maneuver with. Walking sticks are used by young and old alike and add a much needed assist when hiking, camping or climbing. They are very beneficial for the young adventurer. A walking stick will help one to propel them self up a hill or down a hill at a faster, safer pace.

Another benefit in using a walking cane, that we may not even consider, is that in their improved ability to move faster, people who use walking canes are strength training and burning calories as they move. A walking cane is an excellent choice for those who want to maintain their independence. Perhaps they are now feeling more confident and able to get about more, so walking more.

A walking stick or cane can assist in reaching hard to reach items. It gives an added hand when needed. A walking cane can be considered a true blessing.

Walking canes which do double duty as an umbrella are another option.

How do I know what to look for when selecting the right cane?

If you or a loved one needs to consider purchasing a walking cane first speak to your health care therapist to get some ideas on what to look for. But after you have spoken to them, if you are still wondering what to look for in your walking cane here are some things to look for:

Construction- A walking cane must be well constructed so as to support the weight of the user.

Weight- There are a number of walking canes which are lightweight but sturdy enough to aid balance for the user without tiring them out from having to carry it all day.

Handle or grip- The handle on your walking cane must be one which fits your grip and does not slip. It should be comfortable to hold and easy to grasp. If you are one who needs to support much of your weight on the cane then you should consider getting one which is not just decorative, but comfortable for your hand.

Style- If the cane is one the user is uncomfortable with, they will not use it. Walking canes come in a wide assortment of styles to appeal to anyone.

Tip- the bottom of your cane that meets the surface while walking must be level and sturdy. It should not slip. Some are designed to have four (quad) points that meet the ground to add increased stability for those who need it.

Height- The handle should be able to be grasped while standing upright with your elbow slightly bent.

Compact ability – Perhaps you prefer to store your cane away in certain situations, but want access to it in others. This particular folding walking cane, which comes in many styles, can be folded and put in a small tote, then brought out when needed. It consists of carbon fiber, which is very sturdy and durable.
